Prevention Tip of the Week: Bodily Autonomy

Bodily Autonomy is the right for a person to govern what happens to their body without external influence or coercion. Bodily autonomy means my body is for me; my body is my own. It’s about agency, choice, and dignity. The concept of bodily autonomy is the foundation for equality and a fundamental right. This is an important concept for all children to be taught and to understand.

A child who knows that they are in control of their body is less likely to fall victim to sexual abuse. They are also more likely to disclose any abusive events that may happen.

One of the most important child abuse prevention tools is to teach children about body autonomy
